What a wonderful tale

This morning I finished the last chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring, thus drawing me 66% closer to completing #10 on the list.

It's a slow process for me, reading. Usually I do my reading just before bed where I only last about a chapter or so before I nod off, or first thing in the morning to ease into my day. So, there's quite a sense of accomplishment when I finally make it through a book, especially a long one. Even more so when I finish a book that I've been meaning to read for so long. This one in particular has been a long time coming.

Over the summer I was out for a walk around the square and discovered what is now my favorite shop in town, Mason's Rare and Used Books. After a long time exploring the shop I stumbled upon a set of 3 hardbacks containing The Lord of the Rings books for a great price. I was very excited to find the set because I had been wanting to read them for some time and planned on spending my remaining afternoon perched on the back deck with a new book. Unfortunately I didn't have cash on me, so I resolved to leave empty handed and return another day and purchase the set.

Sensing my disappointment, the shop owner took my name and phone number, then handed me the books and an IOU with the amount written on it so that I could get started right away. What a guy right?! Course, I didn't get started right away. I had to do things right and read The Hobbit first, I decided on my walk home that day with my books in arms.

So yes, I read the Hobbit, which I loved, then a couple other books, and finally just before my birthday I began The Fellowship. And this morning I finished it, the first of the 3 Lord of the Rings books. Yay!

He's truly a wonderful teller of tales that Tolkien, and I had to share my enthusiasm. But there's much more of the story to read, much more of the journey ahead, so I'm off to begin part 2, Two Towers! Goodnight!

It's a big coincidence! I've been watching the whole trilogy these Christmas days! Everytime I watch TLOTR I feel trapped on Tolkien's universe the following days and this time I've been looking on the wikipedia about some of his items! =)

Reading, in my case, I did it long time ago. But I couldn't do it with The Silmarilion... hard stuff for me that one!
My last reading has been Annapurna -in english-, by M. Herzog, the man who conquered it in the 50's. Such a brave story!

Ha! That IS a coincidence! It's a great set of movies! I love them.

I've been to your blog a couple times, but I only get bits and pieces of what you're writing with my limited spanish knowledge.

As for The Silmarilion, I actually had to look it up cause I hadn't heard of it. That's pretty intense! Prolly a bit much for me as well, but I'll have to check into Annapurna for future reads. Have a great week!

Congrats on the accomplishment! I think it's interesting that you read in the morning to get rolling. Had you watched the movies prior to reading the book? I loved that trilogy. Oh boy did I.

I just started reading Catcher in the Rye, part of #3 on my list. In a way, I feel like a h.s. reject for not having read it yet!

I had seen the movies beforehand they're my favorites! I was a fan on the animated Hobbit movie as a kid, but I'd never read any of his stuff. After the movies I was compelled to read the books, but never got around to it. There's so much more to the story! I just love it.

I've never read Catcher in the Rye either, so I'm with you! :) Let me know what you think!

this is such a great book, and so vastly different from the movie! i admit, i only read the book because i so loved the movies. good on you for tackling this very long(winded) but great tale. i just finished the twilight series, very light reading yes, but it was the first time i picked up a book in a very long time. cooking and crafting and taking pictures has taken up my life as of late.
your blog is wonderful, came over from your awesome light box post.

Angry Asian: I loved the movies as well! And you're right, there's soooo much more to the book, it's been wonderful exploring so much more of the world and the characters. Tom Bombidil was awesome! I hear you about spending time cooking and crafting instead of reading. That's why it takes me forever to finish a book! Thanks for stopping by my site, definitely send me a link if you get your light box up and running! Have a great weekend!
